Can we imagine generating electricity while seated in a running vehicle?

Yes, we can

Can we contribute to reducing the carbon footprint?

Yes, we can

Can we invent an ingenuous method to protect the greenhouse?

Yes, we can

As part of our social responsibility, the CENTRE FOR SYSTEM DESIGN, NITK , SURATHKAL initiates to walk the talk by contributing our might to save earth. The idea was to tap every opportunity to produce energy impromptu.

Welcome to a one hundred and thirty seven year old discovery by French physicists Jacques and Pierre Curie – piezoelectricity- it has become our natural choice for obvious reasons that harnessing this renewable green energy had the potential of directly or indirectly contributing to the reduction of green house gases.

A computer aided three-dimensional interactive application design was made use of to create a base spring- female. A 3D System "Standard Triangle Language" or "Standard Tessellation Language" was used to convert to a corresponding G-code which basically is a language in which people tell computerized machine tools how to make something. A Slic3r is the tool one needs to convert a digital 3D model into printing instructions for a 3D printer. It cuts the model into horizontal slices (layers) and generates tool paths to fill them and then calculates the amount of material to be extruded. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is an additive manufacturing (AM) technology commonly used for modeling, prototyping, and production applications. It is one of the techniques used for 3D printing that involves fusion deposition method by expending polylactic acid filament. The finished prototypes are fitted under the seats of vehicles. The lnconel based material assembled gears rotate with passenger movements and power is hence, generated from the piezo materials.

Most novel ideas of green energy till date, turned out to be either overpriced or entailed sizeable space; and space being a challenge in modern cities; the innovations were not commercially inspiring.

The CENTRE FOR SYSTEM DESIGN, NITK, SURATHKAL opened to both these challenges and observed 1mm to 1000 mm space of cost effective piezo-plates generator harvesting 150 Mue joules of energy from just one meter of chord displacements.
